Bergen County has no large cities, but is split into 70 municipalities. Established in 1683, it covers an area of 246 mi² and is located in the northeastern corner of New Jersey. With a population of 936,692, it's the most populous county. The county seat is located in Hackensack, which is known as being home to astronaut Wally Schirra.
Essex County was named after Essex county in East England. It's the third most populous county in the state and has a population of 799,767. Established on March 7, 1683, it covers 129.6 mi². Newark is the county seat and is also known as the cultural center for the state.
Hudson County is located in eastern New Jersey and encompasses an area of 62.31 mi². The fourth largest populous county in the state, Hudson County has an estimated population of 676,601 as of 2018. The county seat is located in Jersey City, which is known for its 1,212 acre Liberty State Park. Hudson County was established in 1840.
Middlesex County was established in 1675, and has since adopted the slogan 'The Greatest County in the Land'. Located in north-central New Jersey, it covers an area of 322.8 mi². The county seat is located in New Brunswick, which is known for being the worldwide headquarters of Johnson & Johnson - a company started in the 1880’s by three brothers from New Brunswick.
Monmouth County was first discovered in 1609 by Henry Hudson, an English navigator. It wasn't established as a county until 1675. Covering 665 mi², it's located along the well-known Jersey Shore. Monmouth is the fifth largest populous county in New Jersey, with a population of 621,354. The county seat is located in Freehold, a city known for its excellent horse farms.
