Fairfield County covers an area of 837 mi², is found in the southwestern corner of Connecticut, and has a population of 943,823. Established in 1666, Fairfield has no county seat. The area experiences an average of 50 inches of rain, 33 inches of snow, and 175 days of sunshine per year. Fairfield is sometimes known as the Gold Coast, due to the density of affluent communities.
Hartford County was established in 1666. Located in north-central Connecticut, it covers an area of 750 mi². With a population of 892,697, it is the second most populous county in the state as of 2018. Its largest city, Hartford, is known as “The Insurance Capital of the World".
Litchfield County is found in the northwest corner of Connecticut and covers an area of 945 mi². It has a population of 181,111 and, as with all counties in Connecticut, there is no county seat. The area was established in 1751 and experiences an average of 198 days of sunshine per year.
Known as the home of Yale University, New Haven County covers an area of 862 mi². With a population of 857,620, it is the third most populous county in the state. The county was established in 1666 and is located in south-central Connecticut.
New London County was established in 1666 and covers an area of 772 mi². Located on the mouth of the Thames River, New London is considered a seaport city. The fourth most populous county in Connecticut, it has a population of 266,784. Whaling was once a significant source of income in New London City, funding much of the city's early growth.
